This morning we visited a very successful local business that produces the most delicious olive oil and red wine. Here at Olivares de Quinton they make three types of olive oil all very different from our European olive oil. we did an olive oil tasting and we sipped neat olive oil. Something I've never done before but it was delicious. The tasting also involved trying local cheese and bread. Also delicious! The olive vines are recycled after 30 years and the old vines are composted for fertiliser and some of the pips are ground up and burnt to heat all the hot water for this beautiful estate. Sadly we can't buy their delicious oil in England.

They also make malbec wine and they are the only producers of Malbec in Uruguay. There is a niche in the market here as Argentina is a huge producer but no one was making it here in Uruguay. The grapes are picked in February and March unlike the olives which are picked in March and April. The olive oil is processed and bottled within an hour of picking. We were invited to try all three of their malbec wines of various ages, which was a problem for me as I don't drink red wine! However for those who do drink red wine, it slipped down very well. The youngest red wine was bottled in 2020 and is often served chilled in the hot summer months. What a lovely way to spend a morning and not only a chance to try their wine but we also tried both the olive oil and red wine one with wonderful local cheese and local salami. Now it's back to Buenos Aires on the ferry before a flight home tomorrow morning.
