Itinerary

Neko Harbour

Neko Harbour is a bay located on the Antarctic Peninsula, on the Graham Coast in the northwest part of the peninsula. It is known for its large colony of Gentoo penguins, as well as its stunning scenery, including glaciers and mountains. The bay is also home to a research station operated by the Argentine government. Neko Harbour is a popular destination for tourists visiting Antarctica, as it is one of the most easily accessible areas of the continent. However, due to its remote location, visiting Neko Harbour requires a journey by ship or small aircraft, and can be affected by severe weather conditions.

Susan's comments

today we have stepped onto the antarctic peninsula the world's seventh continent. To say I'm lost for words is an understatement. I'm sailing past huge icebergs which have carved off the glaciers while snow Petrels swoop above, albatross hover next to our boat and the penguins dive in and out of the water. Going outside requires 3 pairs of trousers underneath waterproof trousers and 2 thermal vests, reinforced with 2 jumpers, scarves, hats, gloves and a windproof coat.

Every Time we set foot on land we have to go through very strict biosecurity measures to help keep this outstanding wilderness in pristine condition. we are not allowed to sit or kneel anywhere and of course penguins always have the right of way!

This afternoon the boat is heading to Port Lockroy and the penguin post office, camera in hand & surrounded by penguins! Here the sea is calm before we head north in 2 days time through the Drake Passage and back to Ushuaia. This surely has to be one of the most unspoilt and inspiring places on the Earth.
