Heading back to Ushuaia

Susan's comments

We have 2 big sea days in the roughest sea in the world, The Drake Passage and yes it's rough! most people now have sea legs so are able to stand and wobble around at the same time! The 5 metre swell has dropped slightly and I find I can balance with a camera while trying to photograph the odd passing albatross!

The trip has taught me so much more than Shackleton's heroics because it's given me a greater awareness and importance of the environmental impact of such things as whale conservation and our use of plastics. I hope this trip will change me and make all of us ambassadors for a better and safer planet.

Of course I loved watching penguins but sailing beside a pod of killer whales, orcas, has probably been the highlight. I found the whales very difficult to photograph because you see the spout of water and then nothing for several minutes as they disappear before briefly reappearing in a totally different place! unfortunately I can't share any pictures of my whales as I don't have any on my phone but I do have a last picture from the peninsula as we passed the south Shetland Islands as we left this remarkable place!
